Sergio Missiaggia

Lombardy, Italy | Leathersmith

An inventor at heart, Sergio collaborated with legendary labels Armani, Trussardi, and Calvin Klein before launching his own line of striking, minimalist handbags and accessories in 2013. But his first award-winning design was conceived in an unusual place: an elementary school classroom.

Before becoming a full-time designer, Sergio taught primary school for 25 years where his creative spirit illuminated both his classroom and his students’ minds. And one of his innovations, a methane gas experiment set, won first prize in a national design competition and was distributed to schools across Italy.

Today, Sergio’s boutique, Bellemarie, represents a unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Its ethos, however, is deeply rooted in quality and sustainability: not only is every piece made by hand, Sergio sources all of his materials locally, personally selecting everything from buttons to silk to recycled metals.

Daniela Mosia

Lazio, Italy | Leathersmith

Schooled by a master in the art form’s time-honored techniques, Daniela’s journey into leatherworking began with a lot of sore fingers and bloody palms. But instead of being deterred, she embraced the old ways, which remain unsurpassed in terms of aesthetics and durability. Her steadfast devotion to tradition, however, is about more than just longevity: it’s a key pillar of her slow fashion philosophy.

Driven by the belief that we shouldn’t have to compromise our values to own something luxurious, Daniela’s line of made-to-order leather bags and accessories are both soulful and sustainable. Her secret? Put the finest local materials front and center (namely, vegetable-tanned Vachetta leather that’s certified eco-friendly) and bring each piece to life 100% by hand. Every cut, every stitch, every finishing.

Profoundly committed to her vision, Daniela’s perfectly happy if her clients never buy another of her creations. Not that they won’t want to, but because they won’t have to.

Paola Tacconi

Umbria, Italy | Designer

For over two decades, Paola has been creating fashions that defy convention, seeking to strike the perfect balance between style and sustainability. And while her creative influences cross cultures and generations, one thing remains constant: all of her pieces are hand-crafted from organic, ethical fibers.

These days, her eco-boutique, nestled in one Italy’s most stunning hill towns, has blossomed into a must-visit for the fashionable, environmentally-conscious woman. But it almost never got off the ground: not long after she opened her first tiny shop, the region was devastated by a powerful earthquake. But amidst the challenges and doubts she found inspiration, emerging even more committed to realizing her vision.

Alessia Bianco Dolino

Piedmont, Italy | Artist & Designer

Watching Alessia practice the centuries-old art form of Ebru, or painting on water, is a study in contrasts: her style and movements are methodical yet uninhibited, free-flowing yet meticulous. She is, however, consistently in control, and with each stroke, vibrant colors dance and swirl on the surface of the water.

But mastering these techniques was no simple feat. Self-taught, Alessia embarked on a two year process of discovery, full of trial and error. What she came to realize was that Ebru is every bit a science as an art.

Today, her silk scarves, inspired primarily by the idyllic landscapes that surround her studio near the French border, are the embodiment of one-of-a-kind artistry. Given the fluid nature of her canvas, it would be impossible for them not to be.

Salvatore Scaffidi

Sicily, Italy | Ceramicist

Born and raised in a small town on the Sicilian coast that has long been a home to master ceramicists and artisans, Salvatore become fascinated with clay and pottery at a young age. His imagination and artistic interests, however, were boundless.

Now a trained architect, Salvatore’s creations exhibit a mastery of space and form without losing touch with the instincts and curiosity of his youth. His passion for painting, sketching, sculpture, and poetry is poured into each piece, combining to tell a story unlocked from the recesses of his mind, heart, and soul.

Undeniably, his ceramics, and their one-of-a-kind look, represent a contemporary take on the traditional designs born in his hometown. But there’s something deeper at work: he’s looking to breath life into a new conception of home decor and interior culture.

Navarini Copper

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy | Coppersmith

Master coppersmith Pierino Navarini began learning his trade in 1949. Seventy years and three generations later, his family’s melding of time-honored, labor-intensive techniques with trendsetting design have made the Navarini name synonymous with exquisite copper craftsmanship.

And that reputation, built upon an unwavering loyalty to classical methods and a refusal to take shortcuts, has been hard-earned: each piece is hammered exclusively by hand, every design conjured with a mallet and chisel, and every lining is deftly applied over an open flame.

Today, while their copperware can be found in elite eateries around the world, Navarini’s greatest satisfaction comes from knowing their products have been used in a family kitchen, just as they have been used in their home for decades.
