THE ARTISAN

Forged Tradition by
Navarini Copper

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy | Coppersmith

Under the watchful eye of master coppersmith Pierino Navarini, the Navarini family has dedicated itself to combining modern design with traditional, labor-intensive techniques that have made it a standard-bearer for copper craftsmanship.

“We don’t take shortcuts.”
– Stefano Navarini

Your father, Pierino, founded the family business. How did he get his start as a coppersmith?

In 1949, he walked into a foundry at 16 years old and began learning the fundamentals, fusing metals and hammering out sheets of copper with a mallet. A few years later, he took an apprenticeship at his uncle’s workshop in Trento. While there, he was able to hone his skills but also focus on learning more artistic techniques, such as chiseling and embossing.

In 1958 he opened a small workshop here in Ravina. At the outset, he primarily made everyday items but word of his craftsmanship spread quickly. It wasn’t long before he was being asked to create specialized pieces, like ornate serving trays and sacred objects used in churches. His designs really pushed the boundaries of what was possible. Without him, the business as we know it doesn’t exist.

What would you say is the most important thing Pierino has passed down?

I think it’s his absolute commitment to quality which, for us, means using only traditional methods and techniques. For example, in order to increase its strength and achieve that classic dimpled surface, every piece is hammered by hand from a single sheet of copper. Every decorative detail is carefully created with a mallet and chisel. And every piece, no matter how complex, is tinned by hand over a flame. We don’t take shortcuts. The effort and attention to detail put into each piece never waivers.

But while your methods are traditional, your designs are often strikingly modern.

Absolutely. Tastes and aesthetics evolve and, as an artisan, that’s exciting. When we are developing a new design, our goal is to create something that’s equally at home in both a modern or classic setting. But it’s also important for us that our products retain their soul, their humble beginnings. And so, among other things, they must also be practical. In fact, many of our creations were initially produced for us to use in our own home.

Navarini has become a benchmark for quality craftsmanship and its products can be found in renowned restaurants and five-star hotels around the world. What are you most proud of?

We obviously feel privileged that our copperware is well-respected but, for us, the most important place our items are used is in the home. Family is everything to us. Three generations of Navarinis are involved in every aspect of the business. In fact, many of us live right here, on the property where the workshop is located. Nothing makes us happier than knowing our products have been used to prepare a family meal, just as they have been used in our home for decades.
