THE ARTISAN

Sustainable Beauty by
Sergio Missiaggia

Lombardy, Italy | Leathersmith

An inventor at heart, Sergio collaborated with legendary labels Armani, Trussardi, and Calvin Klein before launching his own line of striking, minimalist handbags and accessories in 2013. And his Milan-based brand, Bellemarie, keeps making waves.

“Our clients are curators, not consumers”.
– Sergio Missiaggia

You founded Bellemarie in 2013. What is the brand’s philosophy?

Of course, our goal is to create beauty, but it matters to us how we achieve that. That’s why our production is small-scale, ethical, and sustainable. For example, I’ve experimented with other types of leather in the past but, when I started Bellemarie, I decided to use only adult bovine leather. Also, I hand-select all of our materials and components from local producers, including recycled elements whenever possible. This achieves two things. First, it reduces our environmental footprint. Second, because I’m able to verify that everything we use is of the highest quality, all of our creations are made to last. Our clients are curators, not consumers. They would expect nothing less.

You taught elementary school for over 25 years. How did you wind up designing for labels like Armani and Calvin Klein?

Being a good teacher means continuously experimenting with new ways to keep students engaged. So, instead of stifling my innovative side, teaching nurtured it. For example, one of the things I created for my students, a chemistry set demonstrating natural gas combustion, wound up winning a national award and was distributed to schools all over the country.

After I retired from teaching, I dedicated my time to design. One day, a collaborator and I were exhibiting some of our work at a convention and a rep for Armani was taken by them. The rest is history.

What makes Bellemarie unique?

When we say our handbags and accessories are Made In Italy, we mean it: every component, no matter how small, is manufactured here. And that’s how it should be: Italian artisans have earned their reputation for innovation and quality over the centuries. The first time you brush your fingers against our silk or leather, you’ll instantly understand why we insist on sourcing locally.

Also, our creative ethic is one of simple sophistication, and we don’t deviate from that. That said, as an inventor, I’m always coming up with new designs, looking to push boundaries. Our accessories are influenced by both of these passions; they are timeless yet modern, elegant yet functional.
